Most honeymoon lists send you to a beach. Mexico City is the argument for the other kind of trip: a walkable early twentieth-century neighbourhood, one of the strongest restaurant scenes in the Americas, and mornings that start slowly because nothing you want to see opens before ten. This is how to plan it for two, and what to book before anything else.
Is Mexico City a good honeymoon destination?
It suits couples who want a city, not a resort. The appeal is architecture, food and neighbourhoods you can cross on foot, rather than a pool and a horizon. If you want both, the standard shape is four or five nights in Mexico City followed by a few on the coast, in Oaxaca, or in the Yucatán. What it is not: a place to do nothing. Mexico City rewards a trip with some structure. If your idea of an anniversary is a week without a plan, the city will still work, but you will want to be in a neighbourhood where doing nothing is pleasant, which brings us to the next question.
Which neighbourhood is most romantic in Mexico City?
Roma Norte and Condesa. Both were laid out in the early twentieth century as residential districts, and both kept the tree-lined streets, the low buildings and the small ground-floor businesses that make a neighbourhood pleasant to walk at night. Roma Norte has the denser concentration of restaurants, galleries and bars; Condesa is greener, quieter and built around two parks.
The distinction matters less than the fact that both are the opposite of a hotel district. In Polanco you stay in a tower and take a car to dinner. In Roma Norte you stay on a residential street and walk. For a trip built around two people and long dinners, that is the whole difference.

Does the size of the hotel matter?
For this kind of trip, more than the room does. In a property with eight rooms the staff know who you are by the second morning, breakfast is not a queue, and a request does not have to travel through three departments to reach the person who can act on it. In a two-hundred-room hotel you are a room number with a note on the file.

What should you book before anything else?
The one dinner that matters. Mexico City’s most sought-after restaurants open their books one to two months ahead and fill within days. If there is a table you want, secure it first and build the rest of the trip around that date. Everything else in this city can be arranged the week before; that cannot.
The order we would use:

- The room, once you know the dates. Small properties sell out first, particularly around Day of the Dead and between Christmas and New Year.

When is the best time of year for a honeymoon in Mexico City?
November to April is the dry season, and November is the best single month. Rainfall in November averages close to nothing, daytime highs sit around 23°C and nights drop to roughly 10 to 12°C. It clears the summer rains and arrives before the Christmas and New Year peak, when the city is both full and expensive.

A five-night shape for two
Five nights is the right length for a city honeymoon: enough to stop rushing, short enough that you do not need a second neighbourhood. This is a shape, not a schedule.
- Night one. Arrive, eat close to where you are staying, sleep. Mexico City sits at about 2,240 metres and the first evening is not the one to be ambitious with. Our guide to the altitude and your first 24 hours explains why.
- Day two. Roma Norte on foot. The architectural walking tour in the morning, the galleries in the afternoon, dinner in the neighbourhood.
- Day three. Chapultepec and the museums, or Coyoacán and San Ángel if you booked the Casa Azul. See the best museums in Mexico City.
- Day four. The big dinner. Keep the day light around it: a couples massage in the room (Casa Goliana can arrange one with a little notice), wellness and spas in Roma Norte, a long breakfast, a slow afternoon.

Small things that make the difference
- Tell the property it is an anniversary or honeymoon when you book, not on arrival. Anything a small hotel can do requires a day of notice, not an hour. Casa Goliana can arrange flowers, wine, chocolates or another small touch in the room if you let us know ahead of time.
